Washington Elementary S.T.E.A.M. Magnet School
The Washington Elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Magnet School has been located in the center of Little Italy since 1914, making it one of the oldest schools in San Diego. The school is fondly remembered by the generations that have attended and has a special place in the hearts of everyone in the community.
The Little Italy neighborhood works to integrate the school into the community by volunteering, supporting fundraisers and having students participate in the many community events. One of the most notable outcomes from this partnership is the Mine-A-Lisa mural located by the southbound Interstate 5 entrance from Grape Street. This beautiful 20' x 20' mural is based on chalk art the students created for the 2014 FESTA! The Italian art-themed piece was rendered using “bricks” of color in the Minecraft style, and with the assistance from local artist Jayne Barnett, their incredible work became a Little Italy staple.
Additionally, the Little Italy Association supports the Washington Elementary School Foundation, which exists to enhance and expand the educational programs, greaten the number of resources available to the school and to build a strong, safe and integrated community around the students.
