Little Italy San Diego is one of San Diego’s premier destinations for tastes, experiences, and special events. Known as one of the largest Little Italys in the nation, Little Italy San Diego embodies the nostalgic charm of an old-world Italian city with the contemporary vibe of a dynamic urban neighborhood all within 48-square city blocks.
Middletown, now known as Little Italy San Diego, was settled predominantly by Italian and Sicilian immigrants in the early 1920’s because of its proximity to the San Diego Bay and the fishing industry, which helped create economic strength for the families and community of Little Italy. In 1996, the Little Italy Association, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, was established to usher in the renaissance of Little Italy with a mission to advocate on behalf of its members’ best interests in the areas of public safety, beautification, promotion, and economic development while preserving the unique cultural resources that exist in Little Italy.
