The Little Italy Association of San Diego invites the community to attend a dedication to celebrate the opening of the new Piazza della Famiglia in the neighborhood on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. Developed by H.G. Fenton Company, the Piazza della Famiglia is a grand 10,000-square-foot European-style piazza dedicated to the past, present and future families of the Little Italy neighborhood. The dedication will include a ribbon cutting, commencement words from state and local dignitaries and leaders behind the project, and a reception featuring small bites by Little Italy Food Hall and refreshments.
The dedication will take place in the Piazza della Famiglia, located on W. Date Street between India and Columbia Streets in Little Italy. Multiple elected officials and dignitaries will be in attendance to welcome this new attraction to Downtown San Diego. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be emceed by H.G. Fenton’s CEO, Mike Neal and feature commencement words from Assemblymember Todd Gloria; Mayor Kevin Faulconer; Councilmember Chris Ward; Little Italy Association Chief Executive Administrator, Marco Li Mandri; Assistant Chief Operating Officer of the City of San Diego, Stacey LoMedico and others.
“The opening of the Piazza della Famiglia is significant not only to San Diego but around the country—it serves as a model for innovative community projects that want to create great public spaces,” said Marco Li Mandri, Little Italy Association’s chief executive administrator. “The Piazza della Famiglia enriches San Diego’s Little Italy, acting as a pioneer for other neighborhoods in the U.S. on how a community can activate its public spaces and improve its community by building a central gathering place. It’s especially unique to the U.S. because it reflects the European lifestyle of coming together in public spaces—to eat, drink, people watch, interact with friends and relax after shopping. It also invites residents, visitors and the community to engage with each other.
”With the opening of the Little Italy Food Hall at the beginning of July, residents and visitors can now enjoy beer, wine and food from any of the six food stations and bar in the Little Italy Food Hall in the 10,000-square-foot open space—officially activating the Piazza della Famiglia as it was intended to be. The Little Italy Association will continue to produce weekly activations year-round in the Piazza della Famiglia, including live music performances, Vinyasa in the Piazza, Mat Pilates on the Piazza, its two weekly Farmers’ Markets—the Mercato and the Little Italy Wednesday Market and more.
“H.G. Fenton has been providing quality places for San Diegan’s to live and work for more than a century, and we are proud of the lifestyle opportunity and community-enhancing amenities our team has created through the Little Italy project,” said Fenton CEO Mike Neal. “The collaboration with the Little Italy Association and residents was key to bringing the vision to life. As a result, the Piazza della Famiglia, Little Italy Food Hall, and Frost Me Café & Bakery provide our Vici and Amo residents with an alluring and vibrant experience that is simply unmatched in the region.”
The Piazza della Famiglia project is a mix of public, residential, retail and restaurant space, including 125 apartment homes over 16,000 square feet of retail and restaurants on the ground levels surrounding the Piazza. Frost Me Café and Bakery and the Little Italy Food Hall are now open with two more restaurants, Morning Glory from Consortium Holdings and Farmer’s Table, opening later this year.
